Revolution (2012-2014)

Revolution (2012-2014): Episode 1

Revolution is the story of the biggest power outage since the invention of electricity. Unlike most other dystopian stories, which take worldwide disease, zombies, or cataclysmic events, all it takes to send the world into the apocalypse in Revolution is the lights going out. For 15 years, the world is without power, machinery, or anything that makes up modern life. The world is thrown back to a time before the Industrial Revolution. Now it’s a race to figure out how to turn the lights back on.

Do I Like It, So Far?

My feelings towards the show up to this point.

To say the least, I’m intrigued. I like that it’s something different than the zombie epidemic or the nuclear fallout, which seem to be the norm now-a-days. There have been a few twists and turns throughout which is nice, but I’m a little wary of the characters. The main girl, Charlie, bothers me. She’s a flip-flopper. One moment she’s at one end of the scale, then she instantly switches to the other end. Typically, it goes between a sense of helplessness to pure teenage angst, filled with rage and apathy. It really throws me off because she’s the main character which means there is a lot of her. Still, the premise interests me enough to see past that. For now.

Has It Met My Expectations?

Has it lived up to what originally interested me.

When I heard that civilization was thrown into the dark ages, I instantly thought Medieval Times and that got my hopes up. I’ve always enjoyed the medieval era and have often fantasized about the modern world reverting to that. Unfortunately, Revolution didn’t read my mind. Instead of a medieval twist, there’s more of a Civil War vibe going on. That’s not to say that’s bad. Just not my personal preference. I’d rather see swords and armor than muskets and bayonets. My expectations were dashed a little bit, but at least there was a sword fight.

How Much Is My Favorite Character Involved?

Is my favorite character a big or small part of the show.

I haven’t quite decided on a favorite character yet. For sure, it isn’t Charlie or her brother. Being someone who used to have asthma, I relate to the guy when he can’t breathe. It sucks. The trouble is that he’s stupid about it. If I knew I had asthma bad enough to knock me unconscious constantly, I sure wouldn’t be climbing into dusty old vans or running my guts out through a field with pollen everywhere. Take it easy or I’ll cross my fingers hoping the brother will be cut from the show.

Would I Recommend It?

Will I be telling anyone else to watch.

At this point, I wouldn’t recommend it. Unless it was to someone who I thought would enjoy riffing the show. It just hasn’t given me a big enough reason to run off and tell someone that I’m watching. Maybe that will change in future episodes, but I’m going to hold off for now.

Do I Plan to Continue Watching?

After watching the episode, will I keep watching.

The episode did finish on quite a cliffhanger. I’m intrigued about what’s going to happen, so I’m thinking that I’ll try one more episode with a very tight leash. The good things, like the premise and the cliffhanger, are barely balancing out the bad things, like annoying main character and convoluted plot. Episode 2 is really going to have to catch my attention for there to be a chance of finishing the season.
