Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 traded charm for crudeness as they pushed this sequel to the next level.

Synopsis *May Contain Spoilers*

Still walking the line between being good and bad, the Guardians of the Galaxy continue to help save the day for a price. After defeating an inter-dimensional creature the Guardians get in a heap of trouble when Rocket steals some “batteries” from a race of stuck up gold people named the Sovereign.

During the escape, a mysterious man rescues them and claims to be Starlord’s long lost father. Unsure, if the man is telling the truth Peter, Gamora, and Drax go with him to his planet while Rocket and Baby Groot stay behind. It’s always a good sign when the group separates.

What follows is a haphazard mix of action, unnecessary emotional sentiments, and crude references.

Review: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

PG-13 | 2h 16 mins | Sci-Fi, Adventure, Action | May 5, 2017

Did I Like It?

My overall feeling towards the show.

Although I did like this movie, I liked the original a whole lot more. The original had a certain charm and freshness that stood out from all the other super heroes to me. It made me want to be part of the Guardians of the Galaxy instead of the Avengers. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 their attempt to go bigger and better than the first movie pushed things too far and they lost most of that charm. I still enjoyed the movie, but it didn’t meet my expectations. The one aspect of the movie that did exceed my expectation was the number of sexual jokes and references to male anatomy. I did not expect as many as were in the movie.

Napability?

How easily could I sleep through this.

This movie is very pretty to look at it. Very visual and the action is fun to watch. I wouldn’t/couldn’t sleep through this movie because there is enough going on to keep my attention. If you were to sleep through this movie, it would need to be in the other movie. I don’t think that really counts though.

What’s It Worth?

How much effort/money would I put towards this show.

I saw this in theaters. It wasn’t worth it. Sure it was great to see it on the big screen, but I would have survived without it. It’s also on the edge of worth owning. If you love Guardians of the Galaxy, you should probably pick this one up eventually. If you’re not a fan already, I wouldn’t bother. I’ll probably end up owning it, but I won’t be in a rush.

How Often Would I Watch It?

The frequency that I would watch this.

Let me put it this way. For every three or four times I’d watch the first movie, I would watch this one. So a 3:1 ratio on the series. This movie will be lucky to be pulled out once a year looking forward.

Any “I’m Out!” Moments?

Moments where I mentally or physically check out of the show or other problems I have.

As I’ve already said, the crude humor could have gone away. I didn’t feel that it added anything to the movie and I’m sorely disappointed in the writers. There were quite a few times that you knew they were aiming for a joke, but the theater remained silent. Maybe we were a tough crowd, or that joke sucked. I’m leaning towards the latter.

Another thing that bothered me was the amount of redeeming back story. Oh no… Nebula had a hard childhood by getting bits of her replaced with cyborg parts. Don’t care. What’s that? Yondu was actually a decent guy and raised Peter Quill like a son because he loved him and wanted to protect him. Yeah… that’s lame. I don’t need to have my heart strings tugged for every character in the movie. Focus on the key players and give me more Baby Groot!

Lastly and the biggest thing of all. In an epic battle of the gods, don’t include a ridiculous reference to Pac-Man. I want to see awesomeness! Not stupid things aimed for a quick laugh.

Final Score for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
