PG | 2h 22 mins | Adventure, Sci-Fi, Fantasy | May 16, 2002
Did I Like It?
My overall feeling towards the show.
Of all the prequels, this is my least favorite. To me, it comes across as more convoluted than anything else. I got the feeling that they were aiming for a “Ooh…the plot thickens” feel, but they just ended up confusing me. For example, I’ve never been able to figure out why people were trying to kill Padmé or how this Sifo-Dyas got the clone army created under the nose of the Jedi and why it all mattered. I’ve tried connecting all the dots of Episode II, but haven’t made sense of the tangled mess.
Napability?
How easily could I sleep through this.
Sleeping through Episode II would be fairly easy for me. There’s a lot of traveling, talking, and whining in between the action scenes. The romantic progression between Anakin and Padmé is especially napable.
What’s It Worth?
How much effort/money would I put towards this show.
Other than owning this to complete the Star Wars Sage, this movie isn’t worth much. It does set up Anakin’s turn to the Dark Side and the Sith. Sort of. Other than that, I wouldn’t really bother with Episode II.
How Often Would I Watch It?
The frequency that I would watch this.
Of all the Stars Films, I watch this one the least. If you’re dedicated to watching the entire series each year before the new film, like I am, you’ll end up watching this once a year. Otherwise, I could go several years without sitting down to watch this one.
Any “I’m Out!” Moments?
Moments where I mentally or physically check out of the show.
Most of the “I’m Out!” moments in this film came from attempts to thicken the plot, but doing it poorly. Again, I have no idea why Senator Amidala was so important that she was a target for assassination. Darth Sidious’ long-term plan still eludes me and it bothers me that Count Dooku comes out of no where. I have absolutely no reason to think of Count Dooku as a villain other than the fact that he’s the generic bad guy with an accent. All that is mentioned about him until is his appearance is that he’s a “political idealist” that wouldn’t be behind the assassination attempts. I just found him to be a poor replacement to Darth Maul. No offense to the late Christopher Lee.
The other big complaint I have is the romance scenes between Anakin and Padmé. I found it to be more awkward than precious and I didn’t really have a reason to root for their forbidden love. I came away feeling like: “You’re a Jedi, numbskull! Do your job and stop being such a whiny creep.”
